Umbuyise Art School is a community based art school, where children in the area are taught basic art skills as an after school activity. Named after a hero of the 16 June 1976 Soweto Youth Uprising, the Umbuyisa School of Arts and Culture follows in the same legacy to strengthen and lift the community by empowering the youth. Umbuyisa School is located in Soweto, Jo'burg, South Africa--just steps away from Nelson Mandela's childhood home, the Hector Pieterson
Museum and Memorial, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu's former residence.The School began as a collective of young artists from the community who wanted a space to make their art and help pass on their incredible gifts to other youth in the community
The school is free and run by community leader and socialite Tshepo Ramutumbu.The school caters for over 50 children, ranging from ages six to 16 years of age. The school is situated on the Soweto TV premises.
